Poznan
Poznan is Poland's fifth largest city. Although pretty much on our route through Poland, we wouldn't have visited, or seen and learned so much about the city, if it hadn't been for Garry meeting a young Polish guy, Maks, in the Locarno Snooker club in Edinburgh last December.
Back home in Scotland, Garry usually plays snooker two or three times a week. Determined not to miss out on playing snooker entirely on our trip, he acquired a two piece cue, which we have managed to fit in our already over-full van. He contacted Maks a few weeks ago to see if he could arrange a match.
The meeting place was the Decider Snooker club in the centre of Poznan. After a few frames, Maks gave us a wonderful tour of the main sights in Poznan’s old town, we sat outside for a meal in one of the restaurants in the main square lined with beautiful old painted buildings and went for a few drinks in a very chilled out area by the river. We had not really heard of Poznan before, but it is an absolutely wonderful place for a city break (Wizz Air fly from Luton for around £25 and hotels start from around £40). We really learnt a lot about the city and its history, the uprisings gaining freedom from German and later Russian rule and about Polish culture (including Cherry Vodka).
