Poland's beautiful lakes
With several more days over 35 degrees forecast, we wanted to get close the water. We had planned to go to the Polish Lake District, Masuria, in the North East of Poland. But to split the journey, we found a Lake on the way - Lake Gluszynek, about 40 miles south of Torun. It was a remote location, with a few bumpy unsurfaced stretches of road on the way. The campsite was very basic - really just a field next to a lake with a couple of toilet and shower cubicles. It seemed that it was usually a quiet place but this weekend with 38 degrees forecast lots of people had made their way down to the lake. The owner was really friendly though and although we had no shared language, he enthusiastically communicated through google Translate. There was a beach and jetties, so it was easy to get our kayak on the water.
Crossing Poland we could see most of land was flat farmland - in fact 90 percent of Poland is part of a large central European plain (the Masurian lake district is more hilly and there's just a small area of mountains in the south). The fields are beautiful with a patchwork of different crops, wildflower verges and cover crops of with beautiful flowers. There were many striking blue fields - some I think could be linseed or cornflower.
