Luxembourg City
In complete contrast to the last few days, we travelled to Luxembourg for a city trip. I think I have only driven through and never stopped in Luxembourg before. Also, we have a kind of aim to take Paddy to every European country, and Luxembourg was one to yet to be visited. We stayed at a campsite on the outskirts of the city - Camping KOCKELSHUER and took advantage of the free public transport in Luxembourg to get into the city.
We didn't know what to expect of Luxembourg City, we had done no research and arrived in 33 degree heat. So the first couple of hours were spent, walking maybe 10-15 minutes and then taking a break for drinks in a cafe. There were so many well dressed people, an international crowd looking like they were working or on their way to or from a business meeting, even if they were in a pub. Luxembourg is often cited as the most expensive European country; as a guide to prices, an Aperol Spritz (a necessary extravagance?) was 12 euros. We then discovered another part of town, down the bottom of the cliffs were the houses had a 'fairy tale' feel. We met some guys from London (Brazilian and South African) and joined them in drinking and merriment for the rest of the evening. Ended up worse for wear and lighter of pocket. We had not planned how to get back to our campsite at 1 in the morning and unfortunately the free public bus route had stopped running and we had to get a very expensive taxi. Then we had to change plans to stay an extra night (or daytime at least) in the campsite as we were not going to make the departure time and we were considering going back to the Scott's Bar to watch the football tonight ... but on second thoughts we think an Aire in Germany may be a safer option.
